Faith And Works

Pastor Jeremy expands on the theme of the Second Great Awakening– true salvation should lead to a transformed life, which, in turn, should inspire social change. As God changes you, that change changes the world around you!

Notes 📓✏️:

The Great Awakening (1730s-1740s) – Theme: God wants a personal relationship with people.

The Second Great Awakening (1795-1835)

The Azusa Street Revival (1906-1915)

2 Chronicles 7:14 (NLT): “Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.”

Revival begins in me.

“Religion is one of the subjects which occupies the least of the attention of the American people.”

The theme of the Second Great Awakening was this… True salvation should lead to a transformed life, which, in turn, should inspire social change.

When you are saved, your life changes, and so do things around you.

2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT): “This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”

“Sanctification” (Salvation leads to Sanctification)

Sanctification is simply becoming more and more like Jesus every day.

Philippians 1:6 (NLT): “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns.”

Sanctification requires your cooperation.

James 4:7-8a (NLT): “So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Come close to God, and God will come close to you.”

Philippians 2:12b-13 (NLT): “Work hard to show the results of your salvation, obeying God with deep reverence and fear. For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.”

Galatians 5:16-17 (NLT): “So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves. The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out your good intentions.”

Making right choices make right choices easier to make.

God changes you, and that change changes the world around you.

Ephesians 2:10 (NLT): “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”

Changed people change their world.

Newton later wrote, “I once was lost, but now am found; was blind, but now I see.”

Amazing Grace Lyrics

1. Amazing grace! How sweet the sound

That saved a wretch like me!

I once was lost, but now am found;

Was blind, but now I see.

2. ’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,

And grace my fears relieved;

How precious did that grace appear

The hour I first believed.

3. Through many dangers, toils, and snares,

I have already come;

’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,

And grace will lead me home.

4. The Lord has promised good to me,

His Word my hope secures;

He will my Shield and Portion be,

As long as life endures.

5. Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,

And mortal life shall cease,

I shall possess, within the veil,

A life of joy and peace.

6. The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,

The sun forbear to shine;

But God, who called me here below,

Will be forever mine.

7. When we’ve been there ten thousand years,

Bright shining as the sun,

We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise

Than when we’d first begun.

When you are saved, your life changes, and so do things around you.
