Day 5: Maundy Thursday

He went on a little farther and bowed with his face to the ground, praying, “My Father! If it is possible, let this cup of suffering be taken away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.” Matthew 26:39

The events of the Thursday before Jesus’ crucifixion are significant in Scripture. Jesus began by washing His disciples’ feet, explaining that He had come to make them clean. As they shared a meal, Jesus revealed that one of them would betray Him, leaving each disciple questioning their loyalty. Quietly, Jesus sent Judas away to fulfill his betrayal.
During this last supper, Jesus transformed the Passover symbols of bread and wine. He declared the bread to be His body and the cup His blood. This meal used to be symbolic of how God saved their ancestors from Pharaoh’s rule. But now, it’s about how Jesus saves them from the guilt of their own sin and shame.

Jesus prayed for His disciples and all who would believe in Him through their testimony, asking for unity among believers. The night was filled with sorrow and anticipation as Jesus faced His impending crucifixion. Yet, He submitted to the Father’s will out of love for us. What a beautiful picture of His steadfast love for us!
