Advent Day 2: “Embracing the Unexpected”

“But the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David, and He will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; His kingdom will never end.'” -Luke 1:30-33 (NIV)

In Nazareth, an unexpected visit brought life-changing news to Mary. Picture the surprise, wonder, and maybe some apprehension she felt when the angel declared, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.”

Mary’s encounter with Gabriel isn’t just history; it’s a timeless lesson. Life throws unexpected challenges our way, but God’s message to Mary echoes for us: “Do not be afraid.”

Like Mary, we face circumstances beyond our control. Yet, just as God had a purpose for her, He has a purpose for each of us. Mary’s response is our model. “I am the Lord’s servant. May Your word to me be fulfilled” (Luke 1:38, NIV). Despite uncertainties, Mary embraced God’s plan with faith. In our lives, amid unexpected turns, let’s echo Mary’s openness, trust, and surrender to God’s will.

God’s promise to Mary extends to us. In the unexpected, God’s favor rests upon us. His plans are filled with purpose and goodness. As the holidays approach, let’s embrace the unexpected blessings God has, trusting His perfect plans and unwavering love.

Prayer:

Lord, help me face life’s unexpected turns with the faith and trust Mary showed. May I embrace Your plans, knowing Your favor rests upon me. In this season, open my heart to the unexpected blessings You have for me. Amen.
